Information regarding semester 2020-2021

INFORMATION CONCERNING THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW SEMESTER 2020–2021

The semester of 2020-2021 will begin in the conservatory according to the schedule. We have planned things so that everyone can begin their studies as safely as possible. We will still be practicing social distancing and adhering to hygiene guidelines. If you are under quarantine or are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, you should not come to our premises.

NEW STUDENTS

PREPARATORY TUITION

The initial meetings for preparatory tuition are held separately for each instrument. During these meetings, you will schedule your classes and receive guidance on how to acquire an instrument.

Our teachers will let the students’ guardians know the exact time and place of these initial meetings during the week beginning on August 10th. These meetings will be held on Wednesday August 12th between 4PM and 6PM. Please arrive at the Conservatory using the main entrance by the market square.

At the beginning of the semester, our teachers will also give our preparatory tuition students more information about our practice orchestra Valonsäde. Preparatory tuition does not include any lessons in music theory and solfège.

BASIC EDUCATION IN MUSIC

The school for young singers, basic studies and advanced studies

All new students will receive an email with information about the beginning of their musical studies as well as the name of their music teacher by August 10th. If you have completed studies in another music school, please send a transcript detailing your previous studies to us at konservatorio@konservatorio.fi by the beginning of August.

Instrumental studies

Our teachers will contact their students on August 13th (or sooner) to schedule their lessons. It is recommended to sign up for a music theory and solfège group before scheduling any instrument or singing lessons.

Music theory and solfège (musiikin perusteet, mupe)

New students aged 9 to 11 (3rd and 4th graders) beginning their studies in music theory and solfège can sign up to one of the mupe 1a groups via an online form which opens on August 13th. The form will be published on our Finnish website and is accessible via the “Ajankohtaista” (“Current matters”) box on our home page.

New students aged 6 to 8 (pre-schoolers and 1st and 2nd graders) have the option to sign up to a voluntary course called Avaimet musiikkiin (Keys to music). This is done via an online form as described above.

New students who have already completed mupe studies in another music school are invited to a preliminary meeting on Wednesday August 12th from 3PM to 6PM. We will announce the exact time in August. Our goal is to make sure each student finds a music theory and solfège class that is best suited to their skill level. Please arrive using the Selkämerenkuja entrance, located at the front corner of the Conservatory building.

Orchestras, chamber music and choirs

Our teachers will match each of their students with an orchestra or a chamber music group best suited to their skill level once the semester has begun. The orchestra schedules are published on our website at Orkesterit (In Finnish)

To sign up for choirs for children and for young singers, please use the online form accessible via the “Ajankohtaista” (“Current matters”) box between August 10th and August 14th. More information about our choirs can be found on our website at Kuorot (In Finnish).

RETURNING STUDENTS

BASIC EDUCATION IN MUSIC

Instrumental studies

The students will schedule their instrument or singing lessons with their teachers via phone on August 13th, unless the teacher has reached out before this date. It is recommended to sign up for a music theory and solfège group / check the mupe teacher’s email informing the student of their assigned group’s schedule before scheduling any instrument or singing lessons.

Music theory and solfège (musiikin perusteet, mupe)

During the week beginning on August 10th, our mupe teachers will send out an email to all of their old students who were in groups 1a, 1b or 2a last semester, informing them about their assigned groups for the 2020–2021 semester. As we will have to make the groups slightly smaller due to the corona pandemic, some students will have a new group this next semester.

To sign up for the music theory and solfège classes for basic education in music (Avaimet musiikkiin and mupe 1a, 3 and 4) and mupe classes for advanced education in music (music theory and solfège and harmonics), please use the online form that opens on August 13th. The form can be accessed on our home page via the “Ajankohtaista” (“Current matters”) box.

If the corona spring prevented you from completing some of your mupe exams, you will get a chance to complete them at the beginning of the autumn semester. Our teachers will provide more information to those affected.
